Petco Howl-O-Ween Costume Contest

I went to Petco to enter Louie & Lena in a costume contest. There were reporters, camera men & all sorts of news people there covering the grand opening & Halloween event. I guess the reporter liked me he put my picture on the front page of the article. Click on the link below to see it. Lena & Louie had a great time!

Dachtober Fest

It was my last weekend before school started back up & I decided to take Louie & Lena to this daschund meet-up. It was called the Dachtober Fest.

The festival was to celebrate Germany's October fest. So many people came out to the festival there where over 100 dachshunds and owners there. Louie had never seen so many dogs in his life...LOL

There was so much to do. There was bobbing for wieners you should of seen Lena boy was she bobbing to get those hot dogs...LOL , there was a costume contest and then there was a mini race. I entered Lena in the race and she won 1st place. I was so proud of her she made it into the finals but unfortunately a there was a little wiener with short legs was actually faster than her...LOL My friend Amber came along to help me out with the little terror (Louie) he didn't get to participate in any events...he just doesn't listen to well and he is always getting into trouble.

Here's a video of Lena winning the 1st race.

Here is a picture of Lena with her 1st place ribbon

Here are some pictures from the festival...

Finals...Finally

Ok this quarter came & went I can't believe I only have 2 quarters left & then my internship. It really amazes me that I have been away from home for a whole year already. I did super good this quarter & passed all my FINALS! When I went to school yesterday to check my grades I was jumping up for joy. I studied really hard & it definitely paid off. I have been keeping myself very busy between school & work.

I love my new job I have been getting lots of hands on experience in so many different areas and it has helped out with school like you wouldn't believe. I got to assist during Louie's surgery. Here is a picture of me holding up his testies...yes I neutered him, it was something that had to be done. (Maybe now he will stop marking his territory..LOL)

I love being a vet assistant it is a great feeling knowing that I take part in helping animals. I can't wait to graduate become a licensed Veterinary Technician, hopefully make it into UF's vet program continue school and someday become a Veterinarian & have my own practice.

Did I mention that I love my job!

New Job

After looking long & hard I finally found a place that I know I am going to love to work at. Today was my 1st day at work I was hired to be a Veterinary Assistant at a state of the art veterinary hospital. I am so glad that they picked me out of literally dozens of applicants. My boss said there was just something about me that made him decide I was the right one for the job.
I look forward to working there and learning all I can. Having hands on experience is going to help me so much in school . I will definitely keep you updated on how I am doing.
Here is a picture of where I spend my time when I'm not at school.

My Summer Break

I only get 2 weeks off for the summer but my mom surprised me with a cruise when I went back home. We went on a Carnival 6 day cruise to Key West, Grand Cayman & Ocho Rios Jamaica. I had so much fun especially swimming with the stingrays @ Stingray City. I loved hand feeding them it was so intense. It felt like a vacuum cleaner when they sucked up the squid out of my hand. They were very gently and friendly. They say if you kiss one you get 7 years good luck so me & my sisters planted one on Betsy. The locals have names for them as they see them so often and can tell them apart from each other.
When we were in Jamaica we went river tubing & climbed the famous Dunn River Falls that was so cool. It took us about an hour to get to the top of the falls.
Everything was so beautiful. I have attached a slide show my mother made for her blog it is of all the pictures from the cruise.

Furry Scurry

Thanks to everyone that came out & donated, the 16th annual Furry Scurry was a HUGE success! They raised more than $865,000 to help homeless pets this year. They are 99% in reaching the goal that they set of $875,000 for 2009.

The Furry Scurry was a two-mile walk and fun run in Washington Park. Click on the highlighted Furry Scurry Picture link to see all the thousands of people & pets that came out to support the cause it was so much fun! (Furry Scurry Pictures) This fundraiser helps the Dumb Friends League care for as many as 25,000 homeless animals every year and provides valuable services to our community. I loved volunteering my time for such a wonderful & much needed cause.

The day was beautiful the weather was great not too hot, & not too cold it was just right. I donated my time at the even working in the Corporate registration area. It was very hectic from time to time yet everything managed to stayed organized. Amber & I were busy the whole day no time for breaks...LOL We did however manage to watch some of the contest they had going on. By the end of the day I was exhausted but when I look back at waking up at 5:00 am to be there by 6:00 am volunteering for over 10 hours it was all worth it every moment.

I woke up yesterday morning to a blizzard yes you read right a blizzard. It was raining & snowing and boy was the wind blowing. This was my first time driving a long distnace in a blizzard my poor little VW bug. It is so use to the sunny South Florida weather not this icy bitter cold. I took some pictures so you could see for yourself. This week we are going back in the 70's so please tell me what happened yesterday did mother nature have a bad day...LOL

2009 Furry Scurry!

It is getting closer to the date! The two-mile walk & fun run in Washington Park on Saturday May 2, benefiting the Dumb Friends League is almost upon us. I volunteered to work at this event because this fundraiser helps care for as many as 25,000 homeless animals a year.

When the organization was founded in 1910, it was named after a London, England, animal shelter called Our Dumb Friends League. In those days, the term "dumb" was often used to refer to those who were unable to speak.

Although the term "dumb" is not generally used with that meaning today, they kept their name, because it has significant recognition among Colorado residents.

The mission statement of the Dumb Friends League includes these words: “speaking for those who cannot speak for themselves," meaning our companion animal friends.

The Dumb Friends League welcomes every animal in need. They turn no animals away. They are defined as an “open admission” shelter.

Besides those little tidbits they hold a very close place in my heart as that is where I adopted Lena & Mandarin. They are a non-profit shelter & rely solely on donations.

If you live in the Colorado area and would like to be part of this amazing day please stop on by & visit. For those of you who don't live in the area but would still like to help the shelter out you can go to http://www.ddfl.org and make a secure online donation.

Jungle Island

WOW, I am so excited to post these pictures. While down in South Florida visiting my family during spring break my mom booked a VIP tour for me to Jungle Island. We started the tour at 10:00 am with our tour guide Ryan. I told him about my love for all animals but especially for exotics, and how i wanted to become a zoo vet someday. The tour was suppose to be a 90 minute behind the scenes type of deal. We must of really rubbed off well on Ryan because a 90 minute tour ended up being a 5 hour tour..LOL It was once of the best days of my life Thank you Ryan!

We started off with the bird show, you think oh its just another bird show right? Well think again it was one of the most intense lifetime experiences I got up close to a Cassowary. Cassowaries are extremely aggressive and dangerous birds. The Guinness Book of World Records lists them as the world’s most dangerous bird, as they have been known to viciously attack humans who intrude upon their territory. Their middle toes have a long sharp claw with which they can attack and instantly disembowel an enemy in seconds. Their also known for their close relation to the prehistoric Velociraptor. Jungle Island is the proud home of Mama Cass, the only known Cassowary to be trained and in a show anywhere in the world.

My next close encounter was with the African penguins. I was taught how to feed them they are very spoiled penguins. Forrest was the sweetest she kept coming up to me to give her a snack. It was a bit tricky getting the fish just in the right spot for them.

You will see a picture of some macaws sitting on branches we were in their enclosure. No one is allowed in there except for the zoo keepers but Ryan pulled a few strings and got me in. Along with the macaws were some squirrel monkeys they were all running up to me wanting me to feed them some sunflower seeds. They were so adorable. It was so cool being around wild birds & monkeys.

Next we were off to the Lemurs I got to play with Honey, Goldie & Bear they were jumping from me to the cage and back. Their coats were so soft and fluffy their tails were long and bushy. They loved the grapes i had in my pockets they kept trying to pick them. Bear started a LOUD call when he got excited and got the other two started it sounded as if I was in the wild..LOL they were so lovable.

Our next stop was the reptiles. I got to meet Hank the 20 foot long, 2000 lb Crocosaurus, Lucy a 300 year old tortoise, a bearded dragon, a true albino alligator, some pythons and lizards oh did I mention Tarantulas. We did not spend too much time on that side of the jungle...LOL I'm more of a fur lover.

The red kangaroos were awesome. They are the largest marsupial around hopping all over the place. They loved drinking from their bottles they still get drink formula. They would hop into the sacks along the fence when they wanted to feel like they were in their mama's pouch.

Then we went to T.I.G.E.R. it stands for: The Institute of Greatly Endangered and Rare Species it is a wildlife education organization. The tiger show was very informative not only did I learn all the different types of tigers there are I also learned how endangered they are. I saw Bengal Tigers, Siberian tigers, Golden Tabby tigers, lions, and even a liger that weighed over 900 lbs and stood 12 ft tall. His name is Goliath he was so breathtaking. At the end of the presentation I took a picture feeding a baby Bengal tiger named Mitra while Shivu the gibbon sat on my shoulder.

I got to go behind, behind really behind the scene with peanut & pumpkin the twin orangutans they were so adorable. I got to touch them and feed them snacks while I talked to their surrogate mom.

I could keep going on and on about all the things I did at Jungle Island it truly was a great experience but I'll stop & just let you see all the great pictures I got. Thanks Mom I love that your always thinking about me this was the best homecoming present ever.

Finals

Finals are all done and I did great on all of them. I am so relieved that they are over & done with I had been studying so hard. My final grades for Medical Terminology, Humanities & Chemistry were all passed with a "B". I am really proud of myself.
Now that this quarter is over I am home visiting and I am having a great time. My mom booked me a VIP Jungle Expedition @ Jungle Island. I have always wanted to go there and it looks like I am finally getting my chance it is going to be so much fun I can't wait.
I am back off to Colorado on the 30th classes start back up on the 31st then its back to study mode for me. I am also going to try & find a job. I would really like to work some where I can work with exotic animals. They are my passion & I would really like the chance to get as much experience working with them as I possibly can but I am happy getting any animal job. My mom tells me to take any job but I don't want just any job I want "THE" job that is going to make me happy & I want to go to work everyday knowing that I am helping animals in some way.

On My Way To School

I thought I would take a picture of myself in my scrubs...LOL I have to wear scrubs to school everyday. Thank god for scrubs it makes it so much more easier to get ready on those days that I have to be in class at 7:00am. Instead of wondering what to wear I just have to worry about which color to wear we have 3 to choose from green, burgandy & blue not my most flattering colors but I make it work. There also are days that I have to wear my Lab Coat and all my lab gear. Yep you guessed it googles and all but at least they have my faorite color PINK! Now only if we were allowed to wear PINK scrubs that would make my day.

This quarter is almost done and I can't wait I will be going home for spring break YIPPEEEEEE I miss everyone sooooooooo much. I included a picture of my note cards for my Med Term class and mind you this is not even have of them. Yep this is a really hard class but I studied my butt off and got an "A" on my mid-term so I am hoping to get an "A" on my final exam next week. Keep your fingers crossed I know I am.

Mid -Terms

WHOOOOOO! I just completed my Medical Terminology midterm. I am so excited I knew all the answers. They were just coming to me I am so very proud of myself. I have an "A" in that class right now and with this midterm grade it isn't going anywhere.

Med terminology is one of the hardest classes in school it is a lot of memorization. For those of you who dont know what it is here is a brief description: Medical terminology is the study of the language of medicine with emphasis on body systems, prefixes, suffixes, root terms, pronunciation and spelling. There is emphasis on surgical instruments and procedures, diseases, laboratory tests, clinical procedures and abbreviations for each system. Terms related to cancer medicine, radiology, nuclear medicine, pharmacology, psychiatry, systemic disorders and autopsy procedures.

It is a lot to retain & even though I am only half way through the coarse I am confident that I am going to continue to do well in it. All of my hard work & studying is starting to pay off.

My 19th Birthday!

January 28th was my birthday I was woken up by all of my friends & family wanting to wish me a HAPPY 19th BIRTHDAY. That was great and all but I don't think anyone realized the time zone difference as I started getting calls at 5:00 am my time which would be 7:00 am Florida time..LOL that's ok it was nice seeing everyone remember my birthday. I'm sure my mom had something to do with that she was worried about me spending my birthday alone. This was the 1st birthday that I spent away from my family. It was really hard for me as I am so use to being with all of them.
For my birthday I decided to treat myself to dinner at my favorite reseraunt the Cheese Cake Factory. I had a really good time I invited my friend Amber to come with me. I ate until I couldn't eat anymore.

I want to send a HUGE thank you to everyone that called, sent cards and even sent presents to me. I LOVED going to the mailbox and opening it up to actually find something bedsides bills in there...LOL No but for real thank you all so much for making this birthday a little bit easier for me being up here all alone.

Here is a picture of me on my b-day.

Bad Day

My car wouldn't start yesterday and if things couldn't get any worse it was 8 degrees snow falling down everywhere & I had to walk to school, thank god it is only a mile away but walking in the snow carrying a 10 lb back pack is no easy task.

I was FREEZING!!! It was so cold that the sun wasn't even melting the snow. I figured it was just too cold for my little Florida beetle to start up. When I had a break I walked back home to find that the car still wouldn't start. So back to school in the afternoon by foot yet again the snow had stopped but it was still very cold by mid afternoon it was a whopping 18 degrees.

I called a tow truck to pick up my car & take it to the VW dealer down the street. Their shuttle drove me back home and was told they wouldn't know anything until the next day. This was bad news as I had a job interview to go to after school. I had to call & reschedule the interview for later on in the week.

So this morning I get up for school & mentally prepare myself to walk to school in the bitter cold this time carrying about 20 lbs of books as today I had all of my classes. I was dieing I couldn't believe that I had to walk with all that weight but I couldn't take a chance and leave any books at home.

The dealer finally calls and tells me I have water in the gas tank. I was like WHAT???? Needless to say I had them go ahead and fix the car as I can't be without it. $335.00 later the car is running like it use to.

If breaking down, having to walk to school for 2 days in the snow, getting hit with a huge repair bill wasn't bad enough the person that I was suppose to interview with called me to let me know that they already filled the position..Ughhhh I was really looking forward to that job I guess I'll have to keep on looking.

School Update

These past few weeks have been so great I have been doing well on all my exams in all my classes. Humanities is getting interesting we have been reading short stories that I have really found quite entertaining. I have also been having my chem labs and I have to say I was the 1st one finished in my group. I am so proud of myself I really have been trying hard not to mention studying my butt off.
I have sent out my resume to a few different vet offices & hopefully with some luck I will hear back from some of them soon. I would love to get a job in one of the vet offices that would be so GREAT! I would get so much hands on experience that will definitely help me out in school & when I am a CVT (Certified Veterinary Technician) just in case some of you didn't know what CVT meant...LOL
I have also had contact with the Sr. Zoo Veterinarian at the Denver Zoo she is a very nice lady. I am hoping that I can do my internship there that would be amazing. My dream is to one day be the Sr zoo vet but I will settle for being a Zoo CVT for now.
Well I'm off to class did I mention it is freezing over here :o)

Back 2 School

Well its back to school for me. I had a great time in Florida visiting my family I just wish I could of stayed longer. When I got back from my visit I went to check my mail and my grades from last quarter were there along with my new schedule. My 1st quarter I took Perspectives, Technical Writing, Medical Terminology & Chemistry. Chem Labs were so much fun we did different experiments each time we even made ice cream ;0)

I am so excited to get back into the swing of things at school. I have learned so much these past few months especially from my Med Term class. It was a very hard class we had to learn over 100 medical terms a week Prefix, sufix & definitions I never knew there were so many.

I just started my 2nd quarter last week adding Humanities to the mix. Thank god the books we have to read for humanities are animal related I would hate to have to read something boring.

I am hoping to land a vet office job doing anything assistant, receptionist, kennel tech just being in the clinic would be fine by me. I have applied at a few places hopefully someone will be hiring soon I would love to have something to do with my extra time & not to mention help my mom out with my expenses ( I am pretty expensive..LOL).

It has been really cold this month and it has begun to really snow. On Monday we had 4 inches of snow it was beautiful but COLD! I love the snow but I will take the sand over the snow any day. Today it was actually warm here 47 degrees.

The New Year

2008 came & went and now we're in 2009! This is going to be a great year I can just feel it. I have a lot of new year resolutions & I'm hoping I can stick to them. I want to get a job in a vets office, lose some weight, fix up my apartment, catch up with my scrapbooking, do good in school & last but not least TRAIN LOUIE!!!!!!!!!
